The Arrogant American |
Many years ago, I met a friend over the internet who lives in South Africa. It was great corresponding with him and sharing our thoughts and our cultures.
He is an anthropologist and I yearned to know more about others around the world, for my knowledge of any place outside of America was severely limited. Eventually our friendship clashed and he as much referred to me as a typical arrogant American asshole.
Looking back I think he may had been right.

What I want to know is what did you say to your "friend" to make him call you an asshole????
-
I doubt that you were either typical or arrogant. But your friend put you into a stereotype .

Jo and Dr. John: I guess the media outlets all put images into our mind on what a place and it's people are like. From Newspapers, Film, TV and magazines.
The same goes for those who don't live in America. They get fed celebrity gossip, film and all of our conspiracy theory and National Enquirer type of news.
We view many nations in Africa as Third World countries. Those who live in these countries don't like to be referred to as such and feel it's globally demeaning to issue a class system such as this.

I've seen another version of that diagram that labelled Canada "America Jr.". It's funny in a way because many think like that but it's also innacurrate because so many of don't.

well, I don't know if it would make you feel better, :? when I first came to the USA, I held my purse tight -- just because all the gangster movies we watched....
Hopefully, the information age will leave us some room to learn about each other, not just about "celebrities."
Margaret, 1000000 thanks for your support for my blogging adventure! Ela

I think it would depend on one's definition of an "asshole". When I hear the term, I think of my father. Having a different opinion than someone doesn't necessarily make one an asshole. Are you sure it was just you or was he the "typical" foreign jerk? Get my point?

That is SO funny!
Big Island (Hawaii?), lol.
